Franz FIALA has managed the Consumer Council at Austrian Standards International (formerly Austrian Standards Institute, ASI) since its creation in 1991. This institution represents consumer interests in national, European and international standardisation groups as well as in associated regulatory fora.

He had various functions in the European Association of Consumer Representation in Standardisation (ANEC) – including Vice President (2001-2007, 2009-2011), Chairman of its WGs on "Environment" (1998-2013) and "Sustainability" (2014-2019).

Main areas of his work: chemicals in consumer-relevant areas such as toys, child care articles, textiles, construction products, emissions to indoor air, cabin air quality, e-cigarettes, tattoo inks, materials in contact with water supply, food contact materials and others. He was also a lead author of the CEN Guide 16 "Guide for addressing chemicals in standards for consumer-relevant products" and the related background document. Further work areas: child safety in general including child protective products and sustainability subjects such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), environmental indicators and environmental management tools.

Franz Fiala studied Technical Chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology where he received his PhD in Technical Sciences. He also did a postgraduate study on Toxicology at the University of Vienna
