Understand the latest developments on regulations related to RoHS

Over two modules, this course will provide an introductory understanding of the global regulations restricting hazardous substances in electric and electronic equipment (EEE). It will cover regulations such as the European Union RoHS Directive, as well as the adoption of ‘RoHS-type’ regulations by different countries around the world and other regulations also restricting hazardous substances in EEE.

The rise in the global production and use of EEE has resulted in increasing concerns from the authorities and consumers on the exposure of users, and the environment to hazardous substances. To address such concerns, many countries have introduced different regulations and directives to restrict the use of certain hazardous substances in EEE. As an example, the EU has introduced laws, such as the RoHS directive, to restrict the use of ten substances: four heavy metals, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), and four phthalates. Many other countries are taking similar approaches by adopting “RoHS-type regulations or their own regulations to restrict the use of certain substances.

The course will also cover other legislation affecting hazardous and restricted materials and substances such as REACH (SVHC, PVC and flame-retardant evaluation), PFAS restrictions and POPs, EU SCIP database,  PFAS reporting obligations under US TSCA and Canada CEPA, US states obligations (flame retardant restrictions, Cal Prop 65, PFAS reporting), as they relate to the EEE sectors.

Here's what you'll learn by attending the course:

  • which hazardous substances are restricted in EEE;
  • how countries are restricting hazardous substances in EEE;
  • duties of manufacturers, importers and distributors in complying with hazardous substances legislation;
  • market surveillance;
  • labelling and marking;
  • exemptions to the regulations;
  • comparison between jurisdictions on how substances are regulated.

Who should attend?

  • Staff of companies who place on the market finished EEE or components for EEE
  • Consulting companies
  • Other professionals who wish to improve their knowledge of the laws restricting hazardous chemicals in EEE

The course comprises two days with 3 hour sessions delivered virtually. Day 1 will address regulations arising in Europe and the Middle East while Day 2 will cover regulations on hazardous substances in the Americas and Asia and Australasia.
