  1. Module 4

This module will provide an introduction to risk assessment and exposure scenarios. It will also cover approaches to writing a chemical safety report (CSR) and obligations through the supply chain.

Introduction to risk assessment and exposure scenarios

    • General introduction to risk assessment and how it can be applied to the use of substances
    • Defining the lifecycle of a substance using exposure scenarios – how the lifecycle of a substance is described under REACH using exposure scenarios and contributing scenarios.
    • Exercise – selecting use descriptors to define your use of a substance

Writing a CSR – exposure and risk assessment

    • Approaches to estimating and measuring exposure – introduction to in silico tools and how measured data can be generated.
    • Risk management – how risk from exposure to a substance can be calculated and a conclusion reached on whether a risk is acceptable or not. Which risk management measures are available to a registrant or downstream user to reduce risk?

Obligations arising through the supply chain when exposure scenarios are included in the CSR

    •     Obligations of the exposure scenario author
      • Formats of extended safety data sheets.
      • What is required and when
    •     Obligations of the extended safety data sheet recipient
      • Are all your uses covered and what to do if they are not?
      • Exercise – assessing whether your use is covered by a supplied eSDS
      • Proving compliance with exposure scenarios, including measurement and scaling
      • Communication down the supply chain. This includes overview of how to choose relevant information for mixtures
    •     Conclusions and final remarks
