Assessing a biocide for its risk to human health and the environment is an important part of the approval process for an active substance dossier and the authorisation of a biocidal product. In the changing landscape of the regulatory requirements for HHRA and ERA, it is becoming increasingly challenging for industry to stay up-to-date and to meet constantly increasing demands.
This six module intensive training course will give you a comprehensive overview of HHRA and ERA (three modules per topic). It is designed for human health and environmental risk assessors and regulators from industry, member state evaluating authorities and consultancies. All modules consist of theoretical and practical sessions.
In the theoretical sessions, the essential principles of HHRA and ERA are demonstrated, while in the practical sessions, the participants will learn how to use software tools and models. Participants can choose to do the HHRA course (9, 12, 16 November) or ERA course (25, 26, 27) or both courses.
Key topics covered:
Modules 1, 2 and 3 look at HHRA and include discussion of livestock exposure and dietary risk assessment. The requirements for HHRA frequently change and are getting increasingly complex. While new guidance has been published in recent years, guidance still lacks a description of major uses in several product types. This applies especially to livestock exposure and and dietary risk assessment, but also, for example, to the assessment of disinfection byproducts.

- Introduction to HHRA
- Relevant guidance documents (TNsG HEEG Opinions, HEAdhoc Recommendations, Biocides Human Health Exposure Methodology)
- Relevant software tools - ConsExpo and ART
- Exposure assessments, effect assessments and risk characterisation
- HHRA training session
- Introduction to livestock exposure and dietary risk assessment
In modules 4, 5, and 6, participants will be introduced to the key principles of ERA – from basic aspects to more complex issues, including:
- Relevant input parameters
- Different emission pathways and product types
- What guidance documents are available
- How to estimate emissions and exposure to the environment, either using the software tool Euses or generated Excel sheets
