Luiz Gustavo Bezerra is the head of Brazilian Environmental Practice at Tauil & Chequer | Mayer Brown, with relevant experience in litigation, consulting and transactional (M&A) matters.

Luiz had a PhD in Environmental Sciences at the Interdisciplinary Rio de Janeiro State University PhD Program. Master (LLM) in Environmental Law at University College London. Post-graduate course in Brazilian Environmental Law, PUC-Rio. Bachelor of Law and Specialist in oil, gas and biofuels law at UERJ/ANP. He is the Chair of the Brazilian Energy Law Institute (IBDE) Environment Committee.

He has more than 20 years’ experience advising clients in the energy, mining, forest, agribusiness and chemical industries. Luiz has a successful track record in court and administrative environmental proceedings, representing major Brazilian and multinational groups in complex environmental litigation, as well as in negotiations (and other alternative dispute resolution methods) with governmental authorities, public prosecutors and other stakeholders.

He counsels major Brazilian and multinational groups, ensuring compliance and mitigating corporate and environmental risks, in a vast range of environmental related matters, including crisis management, climate change, sustainability, corporate environmental and social responsibility, ESG, indigenous communities, waste laws and circular economy arrangements, water laws, biodiversity, environmental offsets, law and economics, carbon markets and chemicals regulation.
