Biocides Symposium 2022

Marta works in Unit E4-Pesticides and Biocides in the European Commission's Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE). She joined the European Commission in 2019.

Simón currently works as Scientific Officer in the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Bureau of the Joint Research Centre in the European Commission. Previously he worked in a National Competent Authority, later in a chemical multinational company based in UK and in the European Chemicals Agency in Finland as team leader and chair of the environmental working Group of the Biocidal Products Committee.

After studying chemistry in Clausthal (Germany) and Cardiff (Wales) and obtaining his PhD at the Max-Planck Institute in Dortmund Thilo Walther joined the German CA (BAuA) in 2009. He was member of the working party which developed the new BPF guidance.

Camelia started her professional career at Cefic in 2009. Since 2016, she has led Biocides for Europe (B4E) where she actively follows the regulatory developments of the EU biocides legislation. She represents B4E in the various fora at EU level & provides support, information & advice to members in the area of compliance & implementation.

Elodie is responsible for issues related to biocides and for providing support to A.I.S.E. members in implementing the BPR. She represents A.I.S.E. in various EU fora, including the Biocides Competent Authorities, Coordination Group, and ECHA Biocidal Products Committee.

Eugen is senior scientific officer in the chemical safety unit, dealing with inspections & enforcement for the State Government Services in Vorarlberg. He is the Austrian Member of the ECHA FORUM & also appointed chair of the BPR Enforcement Forum. He has 20+ years experience in national & international regulatory issues on chemicals in the context of implementation, enforcement & regulation setting.

Richard Bishop is Operations Director for TSG Europe, focusing on governance, compliance and delivery, and also helps businesses comply with chemicals regulations as a Principal Consultant on TSG's Chemical Compliance, Stewardship and Sustainability (CCSS) team. Prior to joining TSG, Richard was a Principal Inspector at the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). He created and led the Chemicals Regulation Division (CRD) Enforcement Team and was a former UK representative and Chair of the ECHA Enforcement Forum.

Philippa is a Senior Biocides Consultant providing regulatory and registration support to clients. Prior to joining TSG, Philippa has gained over 13 years’ experience in regulatory affairs, with a focus on Regulation (EU) No. 528/2012 (The Biocidal Products Regulation, BPR).

In 2021 Daniela joined knoell as regulatory affair manager for biocidal products. Since 2013 she has managed projects aimed to Biocidal Products authorization, offering support from the data gap analysis to the product authorization. Due to her previous laboratory experience, her expertise on Biocidal products covers both the testing and the regulatory aspects of the projects.                                         

Neal Blossom has been in the marine antifouling industry for over 30 years. Since joining American Chemet in 1988, Neal has served in numerous roles in the development and production of copper and zinc chemicals, as well as the management of global regulatory issues for those products.

Ute is an entomologist. Since 2016, she has worked at the German Environment Agency as a scientific officer where she is responsible for the assessment of the efficacy for PTs 14, 18 and 19. Since 2021, she has also been a flexible member of the ECHA BPC working group on efficacy.

A microbiologist with 20+ years professional experience Meredith has been with Ecolab (Nalco Water) Biocides Regulatory for 5 years, prior to that, she worked in R&D for Diversey and P&G. She is an active member within CEN and a regular participant in BPC EFF WG meetings on behalf of A.I.S.E. She holds expertise in antimicrobials, EU Biocides Regulation, Active Substance dossiers, in situ chemistries, EN norms and BPR efficacy strategy.

Rhonda, RM (NRM), is the CEO of Scientific & Regulatory Consultants, Inc. (SRC). With over 30 years of experience in Federal Regulatory affairs, she has unique insight into antimicrobial product development including test method design, management of studies, product development, technical support, quality control, manufacturing, and facility auditing.

Giovanna is an Italian lawyer specialised in chemical safety and environmental law. After several years in international lawfirm she founded her specialised lawfirm in Milan (Italy) assisting domestic and foreign companies on REACH, CLP, PIC and BPR Regulations compliance, as well as pharma, Plant Protection Products, Cosmetics and Food law issues.

David has recently retired after 35 years in global legislative processes, and a wide range of experience of EU biocide committees, working groups and technical workshops. In addition to his recent role as Senior Regulatory Analyst in Chemical Watch he worked for just under 20 years at UK HSE (UK Competent Authority for Biocides) as well as 7 years in industry and 5 years as a consultant.

Nicole manages the department of scientific assessment and advice at the Dutch Board for the Authorisation of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb). Before joining Ctgb in 2014, she worked in pharmaceutical research and development in various line management and project management positions

Jabik enforces national and European regulation on biocides by carrying out inspections at companies. He is also a project manager for EU projects (BEF-2) and internally advises on the topic of biocides for other inspectors.

After a first experience in the research toxicology team of Bayer CropSciences working on endocrine disrupting chemicals, I joined France Chimie, the French association of the chemical industry, where I shared my time between two positions: expert in environmental health issues for France Chimie itself and consultant for the consultancy company Atout Chimie. I now lead the toxicology team in the Chemical Safety Department of SOCOTEC Environment.

Gregory is the director and founder of Watchfrog Laboratory, which is exclusively dedicated to Endocrine Disruptors, testing chemicals and products. Gregory focuses his research on the endocrine control of neural stem cells. Gregory Lemkine holds a PhD in Physiology of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle. He focused his research on the endocrine control of neural stem cells. Before the inception of the company, Gregory Lemkine also followed the  Challenge+ business program of HEC Management School.

Linda's academic background is in biotechnology and chemical and toxicological risk assessment. She joined the Consultancy Division of Eurofins BioPharma Product Testing in Italy in 2017, where she is responsible for activities related to the registration of biocidal products.

Dr Werner is a chemist and registered toxicologist with an over 20 years track record in hazard, exposure and risk assessments in various regulatory areas. In his present role as Head of Regulatory Affairs at Stockmeier, he is responsible for strategic and business development with a focus on biocides.

Stefanie has a background in environmental engineering and wrote her PhD-thesis on biocides in households and their emissions to waste water at Leuphana University Lüneburg. She has been working at the German Environment Agency since 2009 in the section responsible for the environmental risk assessment of biocides. Within this section, she focusses on the sustainable use of these products.

Susanne is a biologist specialising in ecotoxicology. She has been working for the Pesticide Action Network Germany (PAN Germany) since 2002. As senior policy advisor, she mainly accompanies the revision and implementation of national and European pesticide and biocide legislations with a focus on risk and use reduction measures, the regulation of endocrine disruptors and the promotion of environmentally friendly alternatives

Michael is professor in environmental engineering and Head of Institute of Environmental and Process Engineering (UMTEC). He has been working in the area of wastewater treatment and construction materials for more than 20 years. Specific interests are on innovative and applied source-control and end-of-pipe measures to reduce environmental impact and improve water quality.

Darren enables clients throughout the chemicals and life sciences supply chain to get and keep their products on the European market (both in the UK and the EU). He provides a global clientele (companies, consortia and trade associations) with strategic advice, undertakes advocacy before public authorities and agencies and litigates before courts and tribunals (including the ECHA board of appeal and CJEU). Darren has a wealth of experience with regulation of biocidal products, plant protection products, REACH, CLP, food and feed, GMOs and wider aspects of environmental law, including extensive work with the Aarhus convention. He loves tackling “impossible” problems, learning new fields and working in multi-disciplinary client teams, with scientists, business leaders, regulatory and public affairs specialists and (even other) lawyers.

Hannah Senior Associate at Steptoe and member of the Brussels Bar (Dutch section)advises clients on EU regulatory compliance questions in the areas of chemical and product regulations, including REACH, CLP, biocides, plant protection products, and fertilizers.

Vincent is chemist by training and joined the EU COM to work first on the revision of the EU fertilisers Regulation. In January 2018, he joined the SANTE biocides team where he first started to work on the regulatory process of approval of active substances. Since December 2021, he has been looking after the Union authorisation processes.

Eric joined the European Commission in 2002 in DG ENVIRONMENT, then DG ENTREPRISE, where he was in charge of various policies, including pesticides, fertilisers, plastics, bio- and circular economy. In April 2018 he joined DG SANTE in the Unit Pesticides and Biocides where he is in charge of the biopesticides, and risk reduction activities.

Mike has a background in regulatory and toxicology. For the past 20+ years he has worked primarily in the biocides sector covering a wide variety of different applications (e.g. hygiene, preservation, paints & coatings, insect-control) managing groups in a number of different companies including Zeneca, Avecia, Arch Biocides and SC Johnson. Mike currently has global responsibility for Arxada's (formerly Lonza's Specialty Ingredients) active-ingredient programme, supporting the extensive portfolio of biocidal actives through the required regulatory schemes.

Larry is CEO and Founder of Weiss Bioscience, Inc., a San Francisco based microbiome research and development company and the manufacturer of Symbiome Skincare. Prior to that, he was Founding Chief Medical Officer at AOBiome where he formulated AOB-101, the first live topical therapeutic, and Mother Dirt AO Mist, the first probiotic cosmetic.  While at AOBiome, he ran the first successful remote clinical trial in collaboration with Science 37.

Cecilia has more than 15 years’ experience of regulatory affairs with her main expertise in antifouling biocides. Cecilia’s academic background is within biology and she has a Ph.D. in environmental science focusing on ecotoxicology of antifouling biocides. Cecilia completed her Ph.D. at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
