Gain a thorough understanding of target organ toxicity
This premium 90-minute webinar will examine target organ toxicity with a specific focus on the respiratory system, endocrine system and cardiovascular system, and blood, covering both the structure and function of key target organs as well as the common toxicological effects that occur. The webinars explore how chemicals can cause harm, and how we can assess for these effects.
The following topics will be discussed over the course of this webinar:
The respiratory tract:
- Describe the structure and function of the respiratory system
- Outline the main defense mechanisms which are present in the respiratory tract
- Outline the importance of physicochemical properties in determining where within the respiratory tract a chemical contaminant will penetrate
- Explain what is meant by aerodynamic diameter and mass median aerodynamic diameter and how these can be used to determine where particulates are deposited in the respiratory tract
- Outline the main ways in which the respiratory tract can be a target organ of toxicity (irritation, bronchitis, pneumoconiosis, emphysema, cancer and immunological reactions
- Explain the difference between chemical pneumonitis and aspiration
- Outline the main assessment methods for respiratory tract effects and issues in relation to their interpretation
The cardiovascular system and blood:
- Explain what is meant by the 'cardiovascular system'
- Outline the types of blood vessels and the common effects which may occur
- List the cells of the blood and the differences between them
- Explain how blood is formed (haematopoiesis) and the importance of stem cells
- Explain the ways in which the cells of the blood and bone marrow can be affected as a result of chemical exposure
- Outline the common test methods which are used to assess for these types of effect
The endocrine system:
- Explain what is meant by the endocrine system and hormones
- Explain the difference between endocrine and exocrine glands
- Outline how the endocrine axis works and list three specific types
- Explain the difference between endocrine disruptor, endocrine active substance and possible endocrine disruptor
- Explain why small doses of hormones are effective and what is meant by non-linear non-monotonic dose-response relationships
- Outline the approach which taken for the assessment of endocrine disruption with specific reference to the EU Reach Regulation and the United States EPA
- Explain the OECD approach to the assessment of endocrine disruption
- Explain why there are no formal classification criteria for endocrine disruption under EU CLP and UN GHS
A unique feature of this training webinar is that, due to a strict limit of 25 delegates, you are encouraged to 'raise your hand' and put questions forward throughout the training - just as you would in a classroom environment.
Please note, an introductory/basic toxicology background would be of use for this particular webinar.
