Senior Scientist - Product Safety Standards, Food Standards Australia and New Zelanad

Leise Berven is a senior scientist at Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) which is the statutory body that develops and maintains the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. She has worked at FSANZ since 2010 and presently works in the Product Safety Standards section which manages projects for the regulation of novel foods, food additives, processing aids, and contaminants. She currently manages FSANZ’s packaging work and oversaw the recent completion of a large project on the Australian New Zealand regulations for food packaging materials. She also manages work on the application of nanotechnology in foods and food packaging. Prior to this role, Leise worked in nutrition risk assessment where she was responsible for providing scientific advice on various projects covering infant nutrition products, nutrient substances in food, and dietary exposure assessment.

Leise earned her Bachelor of Science at the University of Minnesota in Chemistry. She also holds a Master of Science in Chemistry and earned her doctorate at the University of Sydney studying nutrition. She has an extensive background as a research scientist in chemistry, nutrition, neuroscience and cell biology.
