Joel's work focuses on making chemistry safer for people and the environment. He is a leading expert on environmental health, green chemistry, chemicals policy, and pollution prevention. He founded the Green Chemistry and Commerce Council, a network of more than 130 companies, including major retailers and brands, dedicated to promoting the development and commercialization of safer, more sustainable chemicals and products.
His work has led to the establishment and growth of the fields of chemical alternatives assessment and informed substitution including the establishment of a new professional society, the Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment. He is a professor of Environmental Health at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
