KEYNOTE: Safe and sustainable chemicals: Needs and opportunities for sustainable products.
The chemical industry provides the chemicals and materials that underpin 96% of all consumer products. Amidst intensifying sustainability challenges, this industry will need to provide the new foundational chemicals, that are both safe and sustainable, that will enable a new era of sustainable consumer products. In this presentation, we will explore the needs and opportunities for new chemicals in sustainable products.

- legislation and regulatory activity across a number of states;
- tracking upcoming effective dates, compliance deadlines, and phaseouts; and

Update on the progress towards implementing the Sustainable Chemistry R&D Act
- The Sustainable Chemistry R&D Act, passed with the National Defense Authorization Act of 2021 creates a whole of government approach to advancing sustainable chemistry innovation, commercialization and adoption;
- The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has convened an Interagency Sustainable Chemistry Strategy team to develop a landscape of sustainable chemistry activities across the federal government, define sustainable chemistry and develop a national strategy for sustainable chemistry that can help shape investment, incentives, partnerships, workforce development and public-private collaboration into the future; and
- the implementation of the Act has been challenged by a focus on basic R&D without a bold vision that connects sustainable chemistry to other key administration priorities and inadequate attention to the challenges that companies across the value chain in securing and adopting sustainable chemistry solutions at scale.
