Joel A. Tickner, ScD, Professor of Environmental Health, Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts Lowell and Director of the Sustainable Chemistry Catalyst, Lowell Center for Sustainable Production; Executive Director Change Chemistry.

Joel Tickner is a Professor of Environmental Health where he also leads the Sustainable Chemistry Catalyst at the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, UMass Lowell which undertakes research, analysis, convening, and strategy to make chemistry safer for people and the planet.  He is a leading expert on chemicals policy, substitution, and sustainable chemistry and has served as a trusted advisor to governments, industry, and non-profits for over 20 years.

Tickner’s work has led to the establishment and growth of the field of chemical alternatives assessment, the process of comparing alternatives for chemicals of concern including the first professional society for the field, the Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment.  Tickner also founded and is Executive Director of Change Chemistry (formerly the Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3)) a powerful network of more than 100 companies across sectors and the value chain representing more than USD $3 trillion focused on accelerating the commercialization, adoption, and scale of green and sustainable chemistry. 

For two years, Tickner Co-Director of the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute, which provides resources and tools to help businesses and communities in Massachusetts to find safer alternatives to toxic chemicals.
