PFAS Updates Europe 2024

Stefan Voorspoels graduated as a pharmacist in 2000 and holds a PhD in analytical toxicology. He is a distinguished scientist at VITO (Flemish Institute for Technological Research), where he is the leader of the chemical analysis laboratory. He specializes in the broad field of chemical analysis of organic chemicals, including PFAS. At VITO he also leads the Flemish Reference Laboratory for the Environment, which is responsible for the development, validation and implementation of all official environmental reference methods in Flanders.

With a keen interest in environmental chemistry and human health, Stefan has significantly contributed to the development of advanced methodologies for identifying and quantifying PFAS in various media, including air, water, soil, humans and many other sample types. His research focuses on innovation and revolutionising current PFAS characterisation, aiming to improve monitoring, remediation and mitigation strategies.

In addition to his role at VITO, Stefan is a guest professor at Ghent University, where he shares his expertise with the next generation of scientists.
